Persecuted Writers Throughout History #1
Throughout history, for various reasons, many well-known authors were persecuted by society and the government. I thought it was time I did a post to honor these literary greats who faced such adversity.
Daniel Defoe
Thus man was known for writing the famous book Robinson Crusoe as well as more than 300 other titles. His early writings revolved around social and political issues and was far ahead of his time in his opposition to xenophobia. He actually was put in prison for his passing out pamphlets.
Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde is by far my favorite playwright. Though, he also wrote essays, poetry, and fiction. Many are aware that eh was openly homosexual in a time and place where this was not at all acceptable. His cheeky attitude and wit make him a great read. His works are still relevant today. He was placed in prison, under harsh conditions, for sodomy and other related crimes. His health decline after prison, but his readings while thetre made him want to convert to Catholicism, but he was denied, most likely on the grounds of his past actions. he died nearly penniless and in exile. Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo gave us two of the greatest written works to come out of France; the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. His political views on a republic and artistry were often contained in his writing. He actually was elected to political positions many times, but when Napolean III seized power in the 1850s, Hugo called him a traitor to France, which led to the author's exile. He continued to be an outspoken opponent to Napoleon as well as issues such as slavery and the death penalty.
