Books With Endings That Piss Me Off

I would have to say all avid book readers have had that moment at least once; the one where you want to go to the writer and ask for the time you wasted reading it back. It wasn't because the characters weren't lovable and believable and the plot not good; it was because the ending basically ruined the whole thing. So, I am dedicating my last blog post before the release of Texas Roze on February 21 (so exciting!) to these unforgettable, frustrating endings. And yes, there will be spoilers.

Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer

For someone who is at least a fan of the Edward/Bella love story, you may find it strange that I didn't enjoy the feel-good ending. The truth is, did I want anyone important to die? Of course not. But for there to be a whole book worth of build up and then no action truly happens; that is a literary let down. This is one big point where I enjoyed the change in the movie version. While there was the same happy ending, the action still happened inside the head of a vampire who could tell the future. This gave us both action AND and explanations as to why nothing really happened. On a side note, it also didn't sit well with me that Jacob imprinted on Renesmee. So, I get that Jacob needed someone to latch onto and love so that Bella as well as the reader wouldn't feel heartbroken and guilty, but it almost seemed like he might end up with Leah. This would have mended two broken hearts at once and really make sense to me. I'm pretty sure i wasn't the only one hoping for this one. But allowing an imprint on Bella's half human child to be the scapegoat for his selfish love of her as well as the sudden reason not to kill the baby; that just felt like a cop-out to me.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Oh, a classic love story, where two people in love create a bond so strong that death can't even keep them apart. That's what everyone makes this sound like. So, I read it hoping to fall in love with it like many other classics like Pride and Prejudice or Romeo and Juliet. Instead, not only do I get a bad ending, which I will get to in a minute, I get a jerk with a bad temper and a narcissist who, let's be honest, are more obsessed with the thought of each other than in love. If things weren't bad enough, the couple never actually gets together in any form, and both are dead by the end. The only solace is that the two are buried by each other. Though, the man Catherine actually married is also right there with them.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is one of my all-time favorite classics here. I don't usually enjoy outside narration or the kind of ending like this societal mishap breeds, but, I AM a fan of this particular narrator and how he tried to bring two people together that should have been with one another all along. That being said, not only does the most important and emotionally innocent character die at the end at the hands of someone who was lied to by the man who should have been out of the picture, but Daisy sticks with her husband and acts as if Gatsby never happened. Suddenly, this likable, sweet woman who was ready to have love on her own terms becomes an insincere accomplice to murder.

Atonement by Ian McEwan

I first discovered this one through the film adaptation and found that the book was just as devastating. The first half of the story is bleak already, with a love affair cut short by two lying little twerps. But then, there seems to be some hope down the road. It looks like the two will finally reunite. But no! It was a lie! You find out the story was a book being written based on true events by one of the twerps from before to atone for her sin of keeping these two amazing lovers apart. The truth is, both died just short of being together again.

Now, I want to know what endings have pissed you off. Feel free to share in the comments!
